The Door County Maritime Museum is pleased to announce the complete schedule for the 2019-2020 Maritime Speaker Series, this year presented in partnership with series sponsor the Door County Medical Center. 

The Maritime Speaker Series offers an assortment of monthly programs dealing with everything from historical topics to current issues affecting the Great Lakes and the economy that relies on them. The Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series programs are held the first Thursday of each month, October through May, beginning at 7pm. The Maritime Speaker Series is held in the Reddin Bridge Room at the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay. Admission is free of charge with a suggested non-perishable food donation. 

This first presentation of the Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series will be held on Thursday, October 3rd, and will feature historian Dan Heibler, sharing “Ghost Stories of the Great Lakes.” Dan Heibler is a docent and historian at North Point Lighthouse in Milwaukee and the Waukesha County Historical Museum. He frequently lectures and talks about “Our Great Lakes” and the American Civil War. He was born and raised in Milwaukee’s Menomonee River Valley, where he acquired his love of the Great Lakes and the ships that sail them. The first large ship he was ever on was the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1959. He is a retired Deputy Sheriff in Waukesha County specializing in Disaster Management, with a degree in Meteorology.

  • November 7 – DCMM Volunteers: “The 100-Year History of the Tug John Purves”
  • December 5 – Paul Kuenn: “What it Means to be a Friend of Plum and Pilot Island”
  • January 9 – Dan Lemere: “The ABCs of ABS and the Winter Fleet”
  • February 6 – Dr. Don Mikulic: “The Ledge, the Lake, and the Limestone”
  • March 5 – DCMM Curator Rhys Kuzdas: “Built for Battle: Sturgeon Bay and World War II”
  • April 2 – Dan Heibler: “Myths and Mysteries: Legends and Lore of our Great Lakes” 
  • May 7 – Wes Oleszewski: “World War II & The Great Lakes”
