It took him three years to do it the first time, and just four days in June of 2020.
Door County hotel owner/operator Mike McCarthy completed a personal quest to circumnavigate the Northern Door Peninsula in his sit-on-top pedal kayak. Join McCarthy during his Door County Maritime Speaker Series virtual presentation on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 7 p.m., as he shares tales of his pedaling journey – getting rained on and blown off the water, and exploring the recreational aspects of enjoying the waters of Door County from a kayak.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with information about how to join the meeting on January 7. There is no charge to participate in this virtual Speaker Series presentation, sponsored by the Door County Medical Center. We ask that you donate a non-perishable food item to a local organization of your choice. We will record the presentation and share it on our DCMaritime YouTube channel and Facebook afterwards.

Listen in to find out about McCarthy’s goal to bring awareness to Door County’s maritime history, the ecology of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, and that yes, you can kayak around the Door Peninsula. McCarthy is the co-owner of the Village Green Lodge in Ephraim with Jamie, his wife and circumnavigation support crew. With her support, Mike pedaled his Hobie Outback kayak with a Mirage Drive pedaling apparatus more than 125 miles, solo.

The presentation will include sights and discussion about the Lake Michigan and Green Bay coastlines, Plum and Rock Islands, the Mink, Oconto and Ahnapee Rivers, and the estuaries of Northern Door. Historical maritime sites will be highlighted, along with awareness of the programming and educational outreach of the Door County Maritime Museum. McCarthy will talk about the possibilities of an officially designated kayak trail that could highlight specific launch sites, routes and sightings kayakers could explore themselves.

During his journey, McCarthy and Chris Opper, owner of The Red Putter and Video Director of Door County Digital, recorded sections of the voyage both above and below the water line, and documented the journey. A movie trailer will premiere during Mike’s January 7 Maritime Speaker Series presentation, as a sneak peak of the upcoming film that will be shown at the Door County Short Film Festival in February.

Support for McCarthy’s Maritime Speakers Series presentation and expedition was provided by Door County Medical Center, Waseda Farms, Ephraim Coffee Lab, The Red Putter, Door County Digital, Wisconsin Sea Grant, Ephraim Business Council, Door County Maritime Museum, Oh! What a Sunset! Guided Hobie Kayak Tours, and The Village Green Lodge.
