For the fifth consecutive year, the Wisconsin Federation of Museums will be celebrating International Museum Day, which this year is being observed on Monday, May 18. The theme of this year's festivities is "Museums and Tourism."
The Door County Maritime Museum is one of 30 museums around the state observing the event with special programming. The Museum will be hosting a Maritime Film Festival at its Sturgeon Bay Museum on Monday, with the first of five films being shown at 10:30 a.m. in the Reddin Bridge Room. The complete schedule of films will be as follows:
10:30 A.M. --The Keepers of Cana Island Light and Keepers of the Door: Two popular documentaries exploring the amazing story of the lighthouses of Door County and the stalwart keepers who kept the lights working properly.
12:00 P.M. --SOS Coast Guard starring Bela Lugosi and Ralph Byrd: From the days of the movie serial, these classic shorts follow the dashing Coast Guard Lieutenant Terry Kent (Byrd) in his efforts to stop the villainous Boroff (Lugosi).
2:00 P.M. --The Wreck and Rescue of the Schooner J.H. Hartzell: A dramatic re-enactment based on the true account of the nineteenth century shipwreck during the “golden age of sail” on the Great Lakes.
3:00 P.M. --Cutters Around the Continent: The adventure of the Coast Guard cutters Storis, Bramble, and Spar as they make their historic transit of the Northwest Passage. All three ships were built in Great Lakes shipyards.
4:00 P.M. -- Cutter Rescues: A documentary highlighting the history and rescue work of the legendary Great Lakes Coast Guard cutters Escanaba, Hollyhock, Sundew, and Mackinaw.
