Our Shipwrecks exhibit features information and artifacts from shipwrecks including the Edmund Fitzgerald, the Louisiana, and Fleetwing.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was built in 1958 in the Great Lakes Engineering Works in Michigan. On November 10 , 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost along with her crew of 29 men in Lake Superior 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan.
The Louisiana was a steamboat constructed in Marine City, Michigan in 1887. During the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, The Louisiana attempted to seek refuge along Washington Island, but the heavy winds ran her aground. She still lies on the southeast side of Washington Harbor.
Fleetwing was constructed in 1867 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. On her way from Michigan to Chicago, a strong gale pushed her into a rocky beach, sheering off her mast. Attempts were made by a tugboat to get her to safety, but another gale forced them to abandon her. She can be found in Garrett Bay in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin.
