In February 2020, a new exhibit took over the second floor landing of the Door County Maritime Museum. Built For Battle: Sturgeon Bay Ships in World War II highlights warships constructed in Door County and the experiences of their crews during the tumultuous years of the 1940’s. This exhibit brings to life the big stories of bravery, sacrifice and tragedy aboard small ships during great engagements upon the waves.
The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two. As a center of shipbuilding during this time, Sturgeon Bay produced hundreds of vessels to supply the demands of the war effort. The new exhibit also explores what happened to these vessels after they left their freshwater docks; most never returned to the Great Lakes.
