We ask that you donate a non-perishable food item to a local organization of your choice.
Wes will talk about methods that anyone can use to search for long-lost history – even using technology in outerspace! These methods come with a warning from Wes: these outlets can be highly addictive. You may find yourself sitting up late into the night, discovering forgotten history, which will lead to more trails, leading to more discoveries, and less sleep.
“There is nothing more fun than talking with my readers or with like-minded individuals who seek to uncover forgotten history. I started out by moving a seat up to a microfilm reader and opening the pages of an old newspaper…”
His professional careers gave Wes a different perspective on history. His first professional pilot’s job was flying contract survey flights for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He worked as an instructor pilot, for three airlines and one corporate operation. During his flying career he wrote books about Great Lakes maritime history and shipwrecks, publishing his first in 1990. In the last 30 years, he’s authored 28 books. He gave up flying in 2000 to author full time.
Wes will talk about the process of publication, and about how publishing can add to the preservation of true history. Historical preservation needs all of the input, material and people we can get. Wes encourages questions and discussions.
As a research historian, Wes must be a detective, finding the facts and fitting the pieces of the puzzle together, to achieve the satisfaction of uncovering the forgotten adventures of real people. Not those people who had fame and fortune, but rather regular folks who worked every day doing honest tasks, which sometimes had key results in historic events.
The Maritime Speaker Series offers an assortment of monthly programs on everything from historical topics to current issues affecting the Great Lakes and the economy that relies on them. Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series programs are held the first Thursday of each month, November through May, beginning at 7pm.
