George Oram, born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, has been sailing on ore boats and freighters all of his adult life. At 18, he started on an Interlake ore boat, the Elton Hoyt. He’s been a deckhand on ore boats hauling ore all over the Great Lakes. When he was 21, he worked as a porter on the Joseph Block and the Wilford Sykes. Seven years later he moved up to second cook on the Adam Cornelius and the Edward Ryerson. He’s been a cook on the Joseph Block for many years.
Life on the Great Lakes will be the entertaining talk from George Oram as he explains what life is like away from your family, feeding the guys, and living aboard ship for months at a time. Find out about his favorite recipes, and maybe get to try a dish too, as the DCMM Maritime Speaker Series continues in February 2018.
